Admission to Academy of the Canyons

Academy of the Canyons (AOC) is beginning its application season for 2020-21 this month. We have an Admissions page on our school’s website with meeting and application information. This will be updated as we go through the process. Applications are online and as we have viewing access to student records in Infinite Campus, we don't need paper records.  We do, however, require them for out of district schools. We will be contacting counselors and teachers for those students with which we have questions or concerns. We will need copies of 504 Plans and IEPS for applicants who have them and will contact the appropriate people to get a copy unless these documents are in Infinite Campus.

Current 8th grade applicants are evaluated by records and put into a lottery if eligible for admission. The lottery will be held and results posted on AOC’s website on Wednesday, 3/11. Lottery result letters will be mailed on 3/12 and intent to enroll replies are due March 27th.  I will send a final list of students coming to AOC to you after Spring Break once we have most of the intent to enroll responses.

As an FYI, we will be using a lottery for the 10-12th grade applicants. We have very few open spots, and this is the fairest option we have.

Please have students go through the regular registration process for the comprehensive high school. I know this happens at the same time as we are making decisions. We get phone calls from applicants about this and we tell them to do everything the residency high school requires them to do.

The district sent an email message to all district 8th - 11th graders about the meetings on 1/8/2020.  An information flyer is attached.

Students interested in attending AOC must live in the Wm. S. Hart District boundaries at the time of application. At the meeting, we give an extensive overview of the school and the type of student who does well in our environment.

Students must be ready for the rigor of our program. They don't have four years to acquire the content and skills necessary to go to college since they start transferable college-level classes when they enter AOC. We look for students who are mature and have grades mainly of A and B. Students with lower grades can apply but we will look into their records to see why they earned a C. For example, if they consistently don’t turn in their homework, they should NOT apply since they won’t do well here. If, however, they earned a C in math but did all their homework and tried, we would recognize they might be average in math but they work hard, are a good student, could do well at AOC, and should apply. Students who want to be here, have good study habits and are mature usually thrive in our environment.

Students and parents must attend the information meeting to have a full understanding of the school before they apply. Applications are not available until after the junior high meeting on 1/29. Instructions on how to apply will be made available at the meeting and on the website after 1/29.

Applications are due no later than Friday, February 21st at 3pm. We will not accept late applications.
